Mutare trust property looter suspects Wilson Masokovere and Temba Sauramba have been remanded out of custody following their arrest over allegations linked to a reported US$2 million residential stand scandal involving Destiny of Afrika Network (DANet).

The housing scam kingpins duo appeared before Mutare Magistrate today, after spending about 48 hours in police custody.

The court granted each accused person US$1,000 bail and imposed conditions that include reporting to the police once every fortnight, refraining from interfering with witnesses and not operating from their offices while the matter is before the courts.

The conditions effectively place restrictions on the duo as investigations and the prosecution of the case continue.

Their arrest followed allegations surrounding DANet residential stands in Mutare, with the matter attracting increasing attention as more complainants reportedly come forward with allegations of similar conduct.

The development has also brought a sense of relief among some of the alleged victims and prospective DANet beneficiaries, who have been following the case closely.

At the court today, a significant number of people believed to be victims or complainants were observed at the premises as the duo appeared in court.

Their presence reflected the growing public interest in the case and the expectations of those seeking answers over the disputed residential stands. For complainants, the arrests have been viewed as an important step towards allowing the allegations to be tested through the justice system rather than through public accusations and counter-accusations.

The court’s decision to impose reporting, non-interference and office restrictions also provides safeguards as the case proceeds, particularly amid reports of additional complainants emerging.

Masokovere and Sauramba are expected to return to court on 20 August, when the matter will continue.

For DANet beneficiaries and prospective homeowners affected by the controversy, the court proceedings have opened a legal path for the allegations to be properly investigated and determined.

So far, a greater number of victims have been identified following the arrests of the land fraudsters. They appear to be gaining courage, as their numbers continue to grow.

The case remains before the courts and the accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
