HARARE, Zimbabwe — From international recognition in China to an emotional homecoming at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and the inspiring transformation of a vulnerable young man into a skilled, self-reliant individual, Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) is demonstrating the power of youth empowerment in changing lives and building a brighter future.

The organisation’s recent activities have highlighted the importance of leadership development, international cooperation and practical skills training in addressing challenges affecting young people, including drug abuse, early pregnancy, unemployment and crime.

Dr Matuka Returns to Emotional Welcome

Recently, TRM youths gathered at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to give their Director, Dr Abraham Matuka, a joyful and emotional welcome following his return from China, where he participated in the Africa Youth Leadership Seminar.

The youths sang songs of welcome, expressing their happiness at his safe return and celebrating the successful trip, which they hope will bring valuable knowledge and fresh ideas to the organisation’s youth development programmes.

They also expressed gratitude to the Chinese Embassy and His Excellency Ambassador Zhou Ding for facilitating Dr Matuka’s participation in the seminar.

The experience is expected to strengthen TRM’s programmes by exposing its leadership to new perspectives, international experiences and opportunities for cooperation that can benefit the young people under its care.

The airport reception reflected the close bond between the organisation’s leadership and the youths it serves, while underscoring their shared commitment to building a future in which young people can realise their potential.

Dr Matuka Electrifies Africa Youth Leadership Seminar Closing Ceremony

During the closing ceremony of the Africa Youth Leadership Seminar in China, Dr Matuka added a musical touch to the gathering with an energetic performance of his song, Africa and China.

The event brought together leaders from different African countries to reflect on the seminar’s impact and the lessons gained from their participation.

Dr Matuka surprised fellow delegates with an electrifying performance of the song, which he collaborated on with Chinese artists in Zimbabwe. Celebrating China-Africa relations and the growing friendship between the two regions, the song got participants singing and dancing along.

The performance became a memorable moment of cultural exchange, demonstrating how music can bring people together across national boundaries and strengthen bonds of friendship, unity and cooperation.

Beyond the entertainment, the moment highlighted the role of cultural expression in promoting mutual understanding and people-to-people relations between Africa and China.

For TRM, Dr Matuka’s participation represented an opportunity to connect youth development with international cooperation, while bringing home experiences that could help broaden opportunities for the organisation and its beneficiaries.

International Recognition for TRM’s Youth Empowerment Work

TRM’s participation in the seminar also brought appreciation from fellow delegates, including Ms Unashe from South Africa, who expressed admiration for the organisation’s work in Zimbabwe.

As a young woman with dreams and aspirations, Ms Unashe acknowledged the importance of organisations such as TRM in addressing challenges affecting young people, particularly the girl child, while creating opportunities for empowerment, personal development and a brighter future.

The recognition offers encouragement for TRM’s continued efforts to support vulnerable youths and promote positive choices through guidance, practical skills and opportunities for growth.

It also reinforces the importance of partnerships and knowledge-sharing in strengthening community-based initiatives that seek to address social challenges affecting young people.

From Losing Both Parents to Building an Independent Future

While international recognition and leadership development mark important milestones for TRM, the impact of its work is perhaps most visible in the lives of the young people it supports.

One such story is that of Troyie, a young man whose journey from personal hardship to growing independence demonstrates the transformative potential of vocational training and determination.

After losing both parents, Troyie faced difficult circumstances as he worked to rebuild his life. He later joined the TRM Youth Centre, where he acquired welding skills that became the foundation of his journey towards self-reliance.

Through practical training, hard work and determination, he began producing welding products for customers who placed orders with him. The income he generated enabled him to rent his own accommodation and acquire property, marking significant steps towards independence.

Troyie also operated a workshop at the TRM Youth Centre, producing products for the community while inspiring other young people to believe in their abilities and pursue opportunities for a better future.

In September, he achieved another important milestone by obtaining his Class 4 driver’s licence, further demonstrating his determination to develop his skills and broaden his opportunities.

As TRM celebrated his birthday, the organisation also recognised his resilience, personal growth and achievements, which stand as a powerful reminder that difficult beginnings do not have to determine a young person’s future.

His journey illustrates how practical skills, access to opportunities and consistent support can help vulnerable youths build livelihoods, restore confidence and contribute positively to their communities.

Turning Youth Empowerment into Lasting Impact

Troyie’s achievements demonstrate the value of vocational training in a country where many young people face limited employment opportunities. Skills such as welding can open pathways to self-employment, entrepreneurship and income generation, allowing young people to turn their abilities into sustainable livelihoods.

The impact extends beyond the individual. Through his workshop and products, Troyie has served customers in his community, showing how skills development can also contribute to local economic activity.

For TRM, his story reinforces the importance of going beyond awareness campaigns and providing young people with practical alternatives that enable them to make positive life choices.

By combining youth support, skills development and leadership initiatives, the organisation seeks to help young people overcome adversity and become active participants in their communities and the country’s development.

The experiences gained through the Africa Youth Leadership Seminar in China, the appreciation received from international delegates and the achievements of beneficiaries such as Troyie reflect different dimensions of the same mission: creating opportunities for young people to succeed.

As TRM continues its work, its message remains firm — young people need not only guidance on the dangers of drugs, early pregnancy and crime, but also the skills, support and opportunities to build meaningful and productive lives.

Together, the organisation and its partners continue to champion a future in which every young person has the opportunity to overcome challenges, discover their potential and contribute to national development.
