The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) hosted entertainer Denilson Musekiwa, popularly known as “Mukomana weBhosvo”, at Chikurubi Female Prison during belated Mother’s Day celebrations for female inmates recently.

The event, held in partnership with Tribute Jar Organisation, saw inmates receiving flowers, footwear, toiletries and food hampers before sharing cakes during the celebrations.

Musekiwa said performing for incarcerated mothers gave him an opportunity to give back to society.

“It is my greatest honour to have been granted the permission to perform here at Chikurubi Female Prison for Mother’s Day celebrations.“To me a mother is a mother whether incarcerated or not,” he said.

Tribute Jar Organisation Product Manager Ms Sandra Usiku, who coordinated the event, said the initiative sought to remind inmates that they had not been abandoned.

“We are excited to be part of the event which brings dignity, warmth, and a sense of being a mother even though one is behind bars,” she said.

Officer-in-Charge Chikurubi Female Prison, Superintendent Gloria Tamanikwa, commended Musekiwa and Tribute Jar Organisation for partnering with ZPCS in rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.

“This gesture gives mothers an opportunity to feel remembered and valued on a day dedicated to motherhood.

“It means a lot when people from outside partner with us to remind our inmates that they are still loved and seen as mothers,” she said.
