Harare Zanu-PF Provincial Political Commissar, Cde Voyage Dambuza, has unveiled plans to revitalise sports and recreational facilities across the province as part of a broader strategy to empower youths and combat social challenges such as drug and substance abuse, crime and unemployment.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to support the aspirations of Vision 2030 by creating opportunities that allow young people to develop their talents, improve their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Speaking in an interview, Cde Voyage said many talented youths remain undiscovered due to the lack of adequate sporting infrastructure, particularly in high-density suburbs.

“We have exceptionally talented youths in football, basketball, rugby, hockey and many other sporting disciplines, but their potential often goes unnoticed because there are no proper facilities to nurture and identify that talent,” he said.

The programme seeks to rehabilitate community sports grounds, recreational centres and youth-friendly spaces that can provide safe and productive environments for young people.

According to him, sports are more than just recreational activities. They are powerful tools for promoting discipline, teamwork, leadership and economic empowerment.

“We want to bridge the gap in youth entertainment through sports and structured recreational activities.Sports can become a source of income, a career path and a platform for raising Zimbabwe’s flag at regional and international levels,” he said.

The initiative comes at a time when stakeholders are increasingly recognising the role of sports and recreation in reducing exposure to drugs, violence and other social ills while improving physical and mental well-being.

Cde Voyage also highlighted the importance of mentorship and inspiration from successful Zimbabwean business leaders who have consistently invested in youth development initiatives.

Among those expected to support the empowerment drive are businessman Kuda Tagwirei and Mabvuku-Tafara, Hon Scott Sakupwanya, who will reach out to them and make the same contributions as they do to other communities.

Dr Tagwirei has earned recognition for supporting youth empowerment programmes, educational initiatives and economic development projects that create opportunities for young Zimbabweans. His success story continues to inspire many youths to pursue entrepreneurship and self-development.

Hon Sakupwanya has also become a prominent figure in community transformation efforts through initiatives focusing on education, health services, sports development, food security and skills training.

His programmes have helped provide practical opportunities that uplift communities and motivate young people to become active participants in development.

Cde Voyage believes combining investment in sports infrastructure with mentorship from accomplished business leaders can unlock the potential of Harare’s youth population.

“The future belongs to our youths. If we provide the right environment, opportunities and inspiration, they will become drivers of economic growth, community development and national prosperity,” he said.

The proposed programme is expected to strengthen youth participation in sports while creating pathways for talent identification, professional careers and community development across Harare Province.
