Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) Chigovanyika has officially launched practical sewing lessons for young girls following the acquisition of hand-operated sewing machines, marking a significant step in its youth empowerment programme today.

The practical sessions commenced today with excitement and enthusiasm as participants were introduced to hands-on sewing techniques, focusing on the making of African attire. The training is designed to equip young people with valuable vocational skills that can create opportunities for self-reliance and economic empowerment.

For many of the participants, the opportunity to learn a practical trade has brought renewed hope and confidence.

The young girls expressed gratitude to Teen Rescue Mission for introducing the initiative to their community, describing it as a life-changing programme that is helping them focus on productive activities and build a brighter future.

They noted that acquiring practical skills keeps them engaged and motivated, reducing their vulnerability to social challenges such as early marriages, teenage pregnancies, drug and substance abuse, and crime.

The sewing project forms part of a broader life skills training programme being implemented by Teen Rescue Mission in Chigovanyika, one of Chitungwiza’s most densely populated communities.

The initiative currently benefits 92 young people and seeks to provide them with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities needed to make positive life choices.

Beyond skills development, the programme promotes a drug-free lifestyle and encourages young people to reject substance abuse, criminal activities, and other harmful behaviours that can hinder their potential.

Through initiatives such as the sewing training programme, Teen Rescue Mission continues to invest in youth development, empowering young people with practical skills while fostering responsible citizenship and stronger, more resilient communities.
