The death toll from the Kariba ferry disaster has risen to 72 following the recovery of three additional bodies late on Saturday, as a multi-agency search and recovery operation continues on Lake Kariba.

In an 8pm update issued on Saturday, August 15, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the three bodies recovered during the latest operation had brought the number of confirmed fatalities to 72.

Police said the identification process for the recovered bodies was still underway as authorities continued efforts to account for people who remain missing.

The recovery operation has brought together multiple agencies, including the Zimbabwe National Army, police, emergency responders and other specialist teams, who are working both on the lake and along its surrounding areas.

The tragedy has also renewed concerns over passenger safety on Lake Kariba, with questions being raised about vessel capacity, operating conditions and compliance with safety procedures.

The ferry capsized on August 11 while travelling from Kariba towards remote communities and fishing areas. Initial reports indicated that strong waves may have contributed to the vessel overturning.

As recovery efforts continue, authorities are expected to release further updates on the number of people still missing, the identification of recovered bodies and the circumstances surrounding the disaster.

The tragedy has left families and communities mourning, while the ongoing search continues to bring closure to those still waiting for news of their loved ones.
