Tears of pain turned into tears of gratitude as young people at Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) Youth Centre shared emotional testimonies of recovery, healing and transformation during commemorations of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday in Chitungwiza.

The event became more than a campaign against drugs it became a celebration of second chances and renewed purpose for youths whose lives had once been consumed by addiction, hopelessness and hardship.

Dozens of young people currently benefiting from rehabilitation and vocational training programmes opened up about their journeys, revealing the devastating emotional and social impact of drug and substance abuse.

One of the beneficiaries, Nommater Marufu, moved many in attendance as she narrated her painful experience.

After becoming pregnant at an early age and entering an abusive marriage, Marufu said emotional distress pushed her into drug use, causing her to neglect both herself and her children.

“There were days when I would not even bathe or eat. I lost hope and lost myself,” she said emotionally.

Her life changed after being referred to TRM, where she received counselling and enrolled in hairdressing training.

Today, she speaks with confidence and renewed energy.

“My life has changed completely. I have regained my health, my confidence and I now have hope for the future.”

Another beneficiary, Shackman Munemo, said unemployment and idleness exposed him to stress and destructive influences.

Through TRM’s sewing programme, he discovered purpose and eventually secured employment within the centre’s production department.

“Now I am productive, empowered and helping create school uniforms. I feel valued again,” he said.

TRM Director, Abraham Matuka said these stories reflect the broader impact of rehabilitation and skills development in rebuilding lives and strengthening communities.

He noted that drug abuse continues to threaten families and communities but emphasised that recovery is possible through support, mentorship and opportunity.

Community members who attended expressed pride and emotion at witnessing youths once considered lost becoming role models and contributors to society.

Through counselling, vocational training and empowerment programmes, Teen Rescue Mission continues to rebuild dignity, restore family relationships and create pathways toward sustainable livelihoods.

For many in attendance, the event was not simply about fighting drugs it was proof that hope can return and futures can be rewritten.
