Mutare – More complaints have emerged against former Destiny of Afrika Network (DANet) trustee Wilson Masokovere, who is currently in police custody together with a co-accused, Temba, over alleged housing fraud involving residential stands in Mutare.

Masokovere and Temba are being held at Mutare Central Police Station and are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

According to information from complainants, DANet’s housing programme is membership-based and is designed to assist low-income earners to acquire residential stands through phased subscription payments.

Under the programme, members make periodic contributions before the organisation unveils residential locations, presents compliance documentation, verifies beneficiaries and allocates stands.

Several bona fide DANet members allege that they had been allocated stands after complying with the organisation’s procedures.

However, they claim that the same stands were later sold to other buyers who were able to make larger or immediate cash payments. Complainants allege that they lost both their allocated stands and the money they had already paid towards the properties.

Some say they were never refunded after the allocations were allegedly changed.

According to undisclosed sources, among the reported cases are complainants who allegedly paid deposits of US$3,500 towards residential stands in Lot 2 valued at US$4,500, while another reportedly paid US$2,310 towards a stand of the same value.

Their identities and police case reference numbers have not been disclosed for ethical reasons and because investigations are ongoing.

Sources familiar with the matter allege that many victims had initially been reluctant to report the incidents because they feared intimidation.

However, following Masokowere’s arrest over the alleged US$2 million housing fraud case, more people have reportedly gained the confidence to come forward.

More than five complainants have so far filed reports with the police in Mutare, while four additional cases were reportedly opened after the arrest.

Investigators expect the number of complaints to increase as more alleged victims present themselves.

The allegations have also brought renewed attention to Masokovere’s removal as a DANet trustee, a development that occurred before the latest complaints surfaced.

Police investigations are continuing and the allegations against Masokovere and his co-accused will be determined by the courts.
