Chivi – More than two hectares of grazing land were destroyed by a veld fire in Gwanyanya Village, Ward 16, Chivi, on 4 August 2026, leaving livestock owners facing a shortage of pasture.

According to reports, the fire was allegedly started by a mentally ill person before spreading across the grazing area.

The incident resulted in significant damage to vegetation relied upon by the community’s livestock.

Village Head Madam Gwanyanya described the incident as a major loss for the community, noting that the destruction of grazing land will negatively affect livestock production and livelihoods.

She urged community members to remain vigilant and avoid actions that could lead to veld fires, warning that such fires have serious consequences for the environment, livestock and human life.

Madam Gwanyanya said she continues to work closely with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), relevant government departments and local communities to promote environmental conservation and ensure compliance with environmental laws aimed at preventing veld fires.

Authorities have continued to encourage the public to report fire outbreaks promptly and to take precautionary measures to protect grazing land and other natural resources during the fire season.
